WHEN TALE OF THE GODDESS TOLD BY THE KNIGHTS …

Of Fashion.

Pardon me for such late post about the most anticipated closing event from Jakarta Fashion Week 2014. Friday, October 25, 2013, when 5 of famous Indonesian designers (FYI, all male) presenting their collections.

Under the theme, “Tales of Goddess”, the designers showcased their interpretation of modern Goddess and I was blown away. Of course, a closing event has to be ‘something’ right? That’s why Dewi Fashion Knights always intrigued me for the whole concepts which brought dearly by each designer involved. They impressed me right down to makeup and hair, shoes, head pieces, hair accessories and leggings! Deep fashionable thoughts were made for this show, I believe. Just check out the pics above if you don’t believe me.

I have to admit the most wearable collections of them all was Populo Batik. First timer to Dewi Fashion Knights, Bai Soemarlono and Joseph Lim, the designers behind Populo Batik presented more than just traditional batik (all made by hand by their artisans in Yogyakarta). More contemporary batik were shown with casual yet modern cutting for women and also men.

Also a first timer, Toton Januar. By the way, he’s the youngest of all knights. But that certainly didn’t stop him to catch up with his seniors. With Indonesian seas as his inspiration for his ultra modern collection, he used lots of silk & brocade with (of course) sea colors tones. But I saw lots of white, off white to be exact. And I particularly love the sheer leggings embellished with coral embroideries. Yes, some of Toton’s dresses used traditional embroidery from West Java & Sumatra.

Mixed of colors were shown at Oscar Lawalata’s haute couture collection. I love all the black ones (obviously), with more edgy touch to them. Even though some of the brighter colors have their interesting patterns, considering that those simple dresses were made by Moulage technique. (that should explain the beautifully draped dresses!)

Let me just say something about Priyo Oktaviano. For me, he’s like the most friendly and approachable designer I’ve ever met. And…he’s very into intricate details. Just look at his couture collection, named Galore. Inspired by French Baroque, with traditional handwoven Tapis (traditional textile from Lampung, South Sumatra), his collection looked very glam.

Tex is just being Tex. Need I say more? But being backstage with him before the show, I can see why. He personally watched Qiqi Franky (the head of makeup & hair do at Jakarta Fashion Week 2014) did his models’ hair for his show, which was waxed with black mud. And he personally put his edgy tiara on his models’ head afterwards. That’s Tex!

LITTLE MISS BUSY

Yup, it has been a hectic week for me.

I promise to update as soon as I can, folks. Meanwhile, please check out my work (lots of them), in conjunction with the most anticipated fashion event in Jakarta, Indonesia, Jakarta Fashion Week 2014.

A GLIMPSE FROM JAKARTA FASHION WEEK 2013: CLOSING SHOW AT IKAT INDONESIA BY DIDIET MAULANA

Jakarta’s very own fashionistas were flocked together for the closing show. The IT crowds were eager to see Ikat Indonesia’s Spring Summer 2013 collection named “Romantika Mentari”.
Andien, one of Indonesia’s famous singer, opened the show with a glamorous tenun gown. It looked complex, just like what Didiet said before in the press conference. “It was a bit difficult to create this collection, because I used the tenun materials from Makassar which known to be fragile. Usually for 10 meters of fabrics, I can make three clothes, but for this kind of material, I can only make one.”
As his mission to make Indonesia’s younger generation to be more aware of our own tradition and culture, Didiet’s designs did just that. Wearable clothes, modern styling with traditional fabrics and touches could be the perfect recipe to attract more young customers to his line.

A GLIMPSE FROM JAKARTA FASHION WEEK 2013: LAST DAY AT SEBASTIAN’S FOR INDONESIA HEART FOUNDATION

Sebastian Gunawan’s show opened Jakarta Fashion Week 2013 previously and his show on the very last day were different.

This time, his ready to wear collection named Sebastian’s (mainly known as Red Label for us) were presented by Indonesia Heart Foundation as a part of their charity campaign “Go Red For Women”. With a theme “Portrait of a muse”, he and Christina Panarese created beautiful detailed cocktail dresses and long gowns which were inspired by Greek’s Goddesses, that we can tell by the gorgeous draping style.

Empire waist dress, mini peplum dress, bolero with colors such as pastel, gold, blue and black created a pretty palette for the whole collection. Very Sebastian which looks are known to be so elegant, chic and classic.

A VIEW FROM JAKARTA FASHION WEEK 2013 FRONT ROW: DAY 8 AT ANNE AVANTIE

Another one of my highlights from the whole Jakarta Fashion Week 2013. Indonesian famous actresses and couples, senior supermodels were joining the models to present Anne’s collection. Adding 3 famous Indonesian singers to sing in the show and traditional dances didn’t hurt either. I felt really entertained, in a fashionable blast from the past kind of way.

Themed “Puspawarni”, the whole show was presented by Molto, the famous fabric softener brand. Imagine, Anne’s fabrics were flying around the catwalk and the audiences felt the breeze of scents from different flowers. Anne was inspired by different roles of Indonesian women and decided to have 7 sequences in her show.

Her signature kebaya and batik fabrics (most of them adorned by crystals), mixed with different fabrics like tulle and velvet. She also injected a touch of modernity to her fabrics through digital print fabrics with traditional motifs to add to her total 50 collection last night.

A VIEW FROM JAKARTA FASHION WEEK 2013 FRONT ROW: DAY 7 AT DEWI FASHION KNIGHTS

It should’ve been the closing show for the whole fashion week, but due through unfriendly weather in Jakarta, there’ll be more shows until next Monday, November 12, 2012.

I can say Dewi Fashion Knights is the most anticipated show at Jakarta Fashion Week every year, when local socialites, fashion people and celebrities flocked together in one tent. Themed “The Next Chapter” there were 5 designers chosen by Dewi Magazine: Oscar Lawalata, Deden Siswanto, Ghea Panggabean, Sapto Djojokartiko and Priyo Octaviano.

Deden came up with his own perception of Javanese culture, wayang kulit for his men and women collection. Priyo was in “Ultra Mod” mode with the deconstructive, edgy and modern design, also for men. Digital Print technology was used at Ghea’s collection. Oscar “My name is 20’s” theme did what it said, the 20’s style with flapper dresses in bright colors and silent movies for the backdrop. And Sapto, thank God he came up with more wearable collection (including the shoes) this year. Somehow Sapto’s headpieces worn by models, reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw’s lace headpiece from Trivial that she wore at Stanford’s (his gay best friend) wedding (remember?).

Personally, I’m surprised to see quite a lot of men’s collection this year, but well, men has to be fashionable too, correct?

A VIEW FROM JAKARTA FASHION WEEK 2013 FRONT ROW: DAY 6 AT LENNY AGUSTIN

As expressive and youthful as the designer herself.

Presented by The Body Shop, Lenny Agustin chose the theme “Paper Garden” for her ever colorful collection. She was inspired by the delicacy and complexity of origami from Japan, which she admitted was a challenge for her because of the reduction of patterns and motifs. Using materials like Batik from Pekalongan and Tenun from Makassar, her creations are unique and out of the box.

And as color striking as her 37 collections, so did the makeup and hairdos. The Body Shop Indonesia’s team of makeup artists created double winged eyeliner, with fun and bold intense colors for all models’ eyelids to complement Lenny’s collection.

A VIEW FROM JAKARTA FASHION WEEK 2013 FRONT ROW: DAY 6 AT BIN HOUSE

Witty details, fabrics flown around, this show was one of my highlights from my fashionable journey at Jakarta Fashion Week 2013.

Josephine Komara or we all know her as only Obin, a legendary designer of Indonesian traditional textile collaborated with Pesona Magazine Indonesia to present her “Time Traveler” collection through her house brand “Bin House”. Traveling around the business for 40 years this year, she needed one year to complete her 48 looks for the show. Described herself as “fabric artisan”, she told the medias that she was inspired by fabrics and women.

A GLIMPSE FROM JAKARTA FASHION WEEK 2013: DAY 5

Proofs that batik can look edgy, energetic and futuristic. Featuring Iwan Amir, Lulu Lutfi Labibi and Sischset Detta, Erasmus Huis presented “Revival of Batik Belanda”.

Batik Belanda is still Batik by us, Indonesian, but the motives are influenced by the Dutch. Back in the very old days (Dutch colonial era), many Dutch fell in love with batik, therefore they created a special pattern, mostly flowers. And they injected the brighter colors too.

It was refreshing to see Batik Belanda by the three young designers from Indonesia, as each of them came up with their own uniqueness.

A GLIMPSE FROM JAKARTA FASHION WEEK 2013: DAY 4

In partnership with Estetica Indonesia Magazine, L’Oreal Professionnel presented a hair show today with theme “Retro Nouveau”.

With the help of three designers, Hian Tjen, Soko Wiyanto and Yogi Pratama, for the dresses at the hair show, L’Oreal Professionnel which responsible for all models hair-do’s at Jakarta Fashion Week 2013, was bringing back the classic color of retro era. The golden days of such beautiful actresses such as Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor have inspired this French brand to create the whole hair color collection for Fall Winter 2012-2013. International hair colorist and hair dresser, Odile Gilbert and Jean-Jacques Doolaeghe created “Shadow Illusion” which reminds me of those Ombre hair trend with brighter hair tip and darker roots. Both created three color creation, named Siren Copper, Ingenue Blond and Vixen Violet.

Thanks to the L’Oreal Hairdresser Ambassador from Indonesia, Andy Lie, Arie S. Hidayat, Bambang Haryono, Irwan R. Doke and Lie Kuang, we can see the three creations interpretation on darker hair and skin tone which mostly Indonesian women have. It was an entertaining hair show with one of Indonesian superstar, Dewi Sandra had her hair styled on stage by Cristophe Gaillet, L’Oreal Professionnel Hairdresser Ambassador from Paris.
